The Steps

Step by Step
  1. 01

Prep the entire face with primer

Apply a thin layer of hydrating primer all over the face, then layer an oil-control primer on the T-zone where skin gets oily. Pat gently with your fingers until it blends smoothly — this creates a solid base for long-lasting makeup.

Pro tipDry skin types can keep the hydrating primer on the cheeks, and only use oil-control primer on the T-zone.

    Long-wear base coverage

Take a matte foundation with medium to high coverage, and blend it outward from the center of the face with a damp beauty sponge to cover the entire face. Add a little concealer over acne marks and dark circles, blend with a puff, then set the under-eye area and T-zone locally with loose powder.

Pro tipFor party makeup, choose a matte base first — dewy finishes can look overly shiny under harsh lighting.

    Sculpted, clean brows

Use a brow pencil to trace a sharp brow peak along your natural hair growth, and extend the tail into a crisp, pointed finish. Comb brows through with brow mascara to keep the shape clean and free of stray hairs.

Pro tipAlign the brow peak with the upward angle of the lifted eye tail to enhance the overall Western glam effect.

Blend out the eye socket transition

Take a matte warm brown eyeshadow on a fluffy blending brush, and start blending from the crease of the eye socket, working upward and outward gradually. Soften the edges so there are no harsh lines, and keep the color contained between the eye socket and just below the brow bone.

Pro tipPick up a little powder at a time to avoid overly heavy color blocks — this creates a natural, gradient transition.

Create a precise cut crease line

Take a small amount of matte concealer on a concealer brush, and draw a sharp, clean cut line along the eye socket crease. Completely separate the movable upper eyelid from the transition shade above. Use the edge of the brush to tidy up the boundary, then press colorless matte setting powder over the concealer area.

Pro tipAfter drawing, open your eyes and check in the mirror — the cut line should have even, symmetrical width when your eyes are open.

Pack color onto the cut area

Take an off-white shimmery eyeshadow, and pat it lightly over the cut eyelid area you set with concealer. Cover the entire movable eyelid evenly, keeping the shimmer smooth and translucent without crossing the cut boundary.

Pro tipChoose a low-saturation off-white shimmer — avoid overly glittery large glitter that would break the crisp, clean feel.

    Lifted winged liner and lashes

Use a black liquid liner to draw along the upper lash line, extending the tail outward and upward into a crisp small wing. Curl your lashes, then apply two coats of volumizing mascara. You can add partial false lashes for extra party impact.

Pro tipExtend the liner tail along the direction of the cut line to make the whole eye look more cohesive.

    Sculpted nose contour

Take a gray-toned contour powder on a small brush, tap off the excess, then sweep lightly along both sides of the nose bridge. Blend from the area connected to the eye socket down to the tip of the nose — don’t connect the shadow lines at the bridge of the nose, and blend naturally so there are no harsh lines, creating a natural, sculpted nose shape.

Pro tipKeep the nose shadow subtle enough that other people can’t tell it’s intentional — it should only leave natural light and shadow dimension.

    Face contour sculpting

Take gray-toned contour powder, and sweep it below the cheekbones and along the jawline, blending lightly from in front of the ear toward the corners of the mouth. Add a little shadow along the hairline too, to enhance the facial contour.

Pro tipBlend the contour edges thoroughly — avoid obvious dark stripes.

    Highlight the high points

Take a champagne highlighter, and sweep it on the highest point of the cheekbones, brow bones, nose tip, and cupid’s bow. Apply a thin layer for a natural glow, and avoid thick, caked-on highlighter.

Pro tipDon’t spread the highlight too widely — concentrate it only on the high bony points of the face.

    Atmospheric blush

Take a warm bronzer blush, and sweep it lightly on the apple of the cheeks, blending diagonally toward the temples. Let it naturally connect with the contour edges to create a healthy, sun-kissed flush.

Pro tipUse a light hand with blush — don’t let it overpower the focus of the contour and eye makeup.

    Rich matte lip color

First apply a thin layer of lip balm as a base, then blot off excess oil. Use a lip brush to apply matte deep brick-red lipstick evenly along your lip shape, and define the cupid’s bow clearly. Finish by misting setting spray all over the face to blend the makeup and lock it in place.

Pro tipFor parties, you can add a little fine shimmer at the center of the lips to make them look fuller.
